Perpetrator Bertling

In June 1917 a German innkeeper and Landsturm militiaman surnamed Bertling killed his five children and probably fatally wounded his wife with a revolver in Gotha, German Reich. Bertling, who was home on vacation, then shot and seriously injured himself and was taken to hospital.[1][2][3][4] According to some reports he had apparently committed the deed with the consent of his wife, because he was unsatisfied with the situation his family had to live in,[5] while others reported that he was probably insane.[6]
