On August 22, 1999 P. G. Sarath, a Sri Lankan civilian, who had been armed by police for local security, killed six people in Padaviya, Sri Lanka. That night Sarath had a heated argument with his girlfriend's parents, and when neighbours rushed into their home to intervene he took his automatic rifle and opened fire, killing amongst others two women and a 5-year-old child, before shooting himself dead. None of the victims were members of his girlfriend's family.[1][2][3][4]
