During the night of January 24, 1965 a man named Hsiao shot dead four men and a woman with a carbine in Taichung, Taiwan, and then sought refuge at a farm, where he took an old, blind woman hostage. For 20 hours he kept about 200 policemen at bay who had surrounded the building, and killed one officer and wounded another when they tried to approach the farm, however he released his hostage during the afternoon of January 25. When police eventually fired tear gas into the building Hsiao committed suicide by setting himself on fire.[1]
